Salary Certificate in the UAE: What It Is and How to Get One

What a salary certificate is in the UAE
A salary certificate is an official letter from your employer confirming that you work there and how much you earn. It is issued on company letterhead, signed and stamped, and it states your name, job title, joining date, and your monthly salary broken down into basic pay and allowances.
Its entire purpose is to prove one thing: you are an employee on a payroll, drawing a stable, verifiable income. When a bank, a landlord or a government department needs to trust your income, the salary certificate is the document that carries that trust, because it comes from the organisation that pays you rather than from you.
It is not the same as a payslip and it is not the same as a bank statement. Those show what landed in your account. A salary certificate is your employer formally vouching for your employment and your pay, in writing, addressed to whoever asked for it.
Salary certificate vs salary transfer letter: what's the difference
People use these two terms interchangeably, and they shouldn't. They do different jobs.
A salary certificate confirms your employment and income. It's a general-purpose letter, often addressed "To whom it may concern", used for landlords, visa steps, or simply to prove you're employed.
A salary transfer letter goes a step further. In it, your employer commits to routing your monthly salary to a specific bank. Banks ask for this when they lend, because a guaranteed incoming salary is the security behind a personal loan or a mortgage. Salary payments in the UAE largely run through the Wage Protection System, the electronic transfer mechanism overseen by the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation, which is why a bank can verify that the salary actually arrives.
If a bank asks for a salary transfer letter and you hand over a plain salary certificate, expect it to come back. Ask which one you need before you request it.
What a salary certificate must contain
A certificate that's missing a detail gets rejected, and you lose days chasing a reissue. A complete UAE salary certificate should carry:
- Company name, letterhead, and contact details
- Your full name, exactly as it appears on your passport and Emirates ID
- Your job title and department
- Your date of joining
- Your monthly salary, broken into basic salary and allowances
- The currency (AED)
- Who the letter is addressed to, or "To whom it may concern"
- The date of issue
- An authorised signature and the company stamp
The name-matching point trips more people up than anything else. If your certificate says "Mohammed Ali" and your Emirates ID says "Mohammad Ali", a bank's compliance team will flag it. Check the spelling against your ID before the letter is signed, not after.
Salary certificate format: what a UAE bank expects to see
There is no single national template, but banks expect a consistent shape: original company letterhead, an addressed and dated letter, the salary breakdown into basic and allowances, and a clear signature and stamp from someone authorised to sign. A scan of a photocopied, unstamped letter is the fastest route to a rejection.
Two things vary by bank and are worth confirming rather than guessing. The first is how recent the certificate must be, since most banks want one issued within a recent window rather than an old letter. The second is whether they want the certificate addressed to them by name. Rather than quote a validity period as a hard rule, ask the specific bank, because it differs between institutions and changes over time.
If you're gathering documents to open an account, it helps to understand the full picture of what banks accept as proof of income for a UAE bank before you approach one, because a salary certificate is only part of a salaried applicant's file.
How to request a salary certificate from your employer
The process is straightforward if you ask the right way.
- 1Email HR or your PRO with a short, specific request. Say what you need it for (bank, landlord, visa), who it should be addressed to, and by when.
- 2Confirm the exact wording of your name and salary breakdown before it's signed.
- 3Ask for it on letterhead with a signature and stamp, not a plain PDF.
- 4Request it as an original if the recipient needs one, since some banks and government offices won't accept a scan.
Most employers issue a salary certificate within a few working days. If yours is slow, tell HR the deadline the bank or landlord has given you, as that usually moves things along.
When you'll be asked for one: banks, loans, landlords and visas
A salary certificate turns up at several points in UAE life:
- Opening a personal bank account, where the bank wants to confirm your income and employment
- Applying for a personal loan, car finance or a mortgage, usually alongside a salary transfer letter
- Renting a home, where landlords and agents check you can cover the rent
- Certain visa and Emirates ID processes, where proof of employment is part of the file. Specific requirements are set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security and depend on your visa type.
A salary certificate supports these applications. It does not guarantee them. A bank still runs its own credit and compliance checks, and the decision rests with the bank, not with the letter.
What if you own the company? Why founders can't issue themselves one
Here is the part nobody tells first-time founders. A salary certificate exists to prove you're an employee, on someone else's payroll, drawing a wage that a third party confirms. If you own the business, there is no independent employer to vouch for you. Signing a certificate for yourself proves nothing to a bank, because you're both the person claiming the income and the person confirming it.
This is the real reason UAE banks scrutinise founder-owned accounts far harder than salaried applicants. With a salaried employee, the bank has an employer and a WPS salary trail to lean on. With a business owner, it has to test the business itself: source-of-funds evidence, an expected transaction profile, company documents, and often a business plan or company profile. The income might be far higher than a salaried applicant's. It's simply harder to verify, so the bank asks more.
Being profitable doesn't remove the scrutiny either. Corporate tax applies at 9% on net profit above AED 375,000 for financial years from 1 June 2023, per the Federal Tax Authority, so your company is a taxable, reportable entity in the bank's eyes. What gets a founder's account opened is a clean, well-prepared file, not a self-signed letter.
If you're a business owner rather than a salaried employee, our bank account opening service is built around exactly this problem. We've opened over 1,000 accounts and we know what each bank's compliance team asks, because we've done it a thousand times.

Getting your paperwork right before you approach a bank
If you're a salaried employee, a complete salary certificate on letterhead, with your name matched to your Emirates ID and the salary broken out, is most of what you need. Confirm with your bank whether they also want a salary transfer letter and how recent the certificate must be.
If you're a founder, the salary certificate route isn't open to you, and that changes everything about how you approach a bank. The company has to be set up correctly, the documents have to be in order, and the source-of-funds and transaction story has to be prepared before you walk in. That's the difference between an account that opens in weeks and one that stalls for months or gets refused.
We do both sides of this. We prepare your file the way UAE banks expect to see it, brief you on what each compliance team will ask, and manage the process through to the account being live. Approval always rests with the bank, but the quality of the file is what most rejections come down to, and that's what we control.

Frequently asked questions
What is a salary certificate in the UAE?
It's an official letter from your employer, on company letterhead, confirming that you work there, your job title, your joining date, and your monthly salary broken into basic pay and allowances. It's used to prove your employment and income to banks, landlords and government offices.
How do I get a salary certificate from your employer?
Email HR or your PRO with a specific request: state what it's for, who it should be addressed to, and your deadline. Confirm your name spelling and salary breakdown before it's signed, and ask for it on letterhead with a signature and stamp. Most employers issue one within a few working days.
How long is a salary certificate valid for?
Most banks and landlords want a recently issued certificate rather than an old one, but the exact window varies by institution and changes over time. Ask the specific recipient how recent they need it to be rather than assuming a fixed number.
What is the difference between a salary certificate and a salary transfer letter?
A salary certificate confirms your employment and income in general. A salary transfer letter is your employer committing to route your monthly salary to a specific bank, which banks ask for when they lend. If you need one and receive the other, it'll be rejected, so confirm which is required first.
Do I need a salary certificate to open a UAE bank account?
Salaried applicants are usually asked for one as proof of income, but exact document lists differ by bank and account type. We confirm the precise requirement for the specific bank we recommend rather than assuming a default.
Can a company owner issue themselves a salary certificate?
No, in any way that persuades a bank. A salary certificate exists to prove you're an employee whose income a third party confirms. If you own the business, there's no independent employer vouching for you, so the bank tests the business itself through source-of-funds and company documents instead.
Is a salary certificate the same as a payslip?
No. A payslip shows a single month's pay as processed. A salary certificate is a formal employer letter confirming your employment and salary as a whole, addressed to whoever requested it. Some applications ask for both.
What details must a salary certificate include?
Company letterhead and contact details, your full name matched to your Emirates ID, job title, joining date, monthly salary split into basic and allowances, the currency, who it's addressed to, the date of issue, and an authorised signature with the company stamp.
